Brian Beatty On Thomas Merton

Borrowed Trouble: Micro Tribute to Thomas Merton(1915-1968)

I wouldn’t write at all if it weren’t for myriad writers before me whose works showed me what was possible. The poems of this series are small offerings of respect, of thanks, to those muses. – Brian Beatty

Peacock calls
sound like children crying
“Help! Help!”

as if they’re trying
to understand the mysteries
of the sacrament.

What you barely hear
in that silence between cries
is the dictionary definition of laughter.

– Brian Beatty

  1. This tribute could just as easily be dedicated to fiction writer Flannery O'Connor. As a reader, I've always had a thing for writers concerned with spiritual matters.
