Brian Beatty On Roberto Bolaño

Borrowed Trouble: Micro Tribute to Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003)

I wouldn’t write at all if it weren’t for myriad writers before me whose works showed me what was possible. The poems of this series are small offerings of respect, of thanks, to those muses. – Brian Beatty

Roberto Bolaño

The doomed boy dared to tongue kiss
a nine-volt battery instead steals
a book of poems from his local library.

The round off-duty cop working security
with an unlit cigarette hanging out of his mouth
rises at his station too winded to give chase.

“Guess you win again, Universe,”
the cop huffs, sinking back into his chair.
“I saw in a dream how this ends.”

  1. Like many readers, I discovered RB via his novel Savage Detectives, but his poetry's combination of confession and creative imagination interest me more than his fiction.
